*Pigeoniers is the French word for Pigeon Towers. Because everything sounds classy en français, non?
Yesterday, our curator told us about the humongous pigeon towers she recently saw in Isphahan, Iran. I think she said they were built at the time of Shah Abbas.
I was looking up the towers she mentioned and found the following information in Lion and Gazelle: The Mammals and Birds of Iran (Humphreys and Kahrom). These pigeon towers would accommodate thousands of birds, and although pigeons’ meat was consumed, the birds and their eggs were much more prized. Their eggs were served as a delicacy. The birds’ droppings were collected and sold as highly nitrogenous manure.
I was reminded of these towers that we saw in Qatar.
I wonder if Qatar will make these towers eco-friendly by collecting the bird droppings.
